Itchan Kala is the inner walled town of Khiva, a UNESCO-listed open-air museum where mud-brick ramparts enclose a dense maze of madrasas, minarets, and palaces. Compact enough to cross on foot, it’s the best-preserved example of a Khorezm caravan city and feels almost untouched by the modern world.

The Minaret That Never Grew
The stout Kalta Minor was meant to be the tallest minaret in the Islamic world, soaring so high its builder could see all the way to Bukhara. When the khan who commissioned it died in 1855, work stopped, leaving a gorgeous, glazed stump that has become Khiva’s most beloved landmark.
